Until a few years ago, it was a widely held belief that depression was a rare disorder among children and adolescents. The basic idea was that children could not display clinical manifestations of mood depression similar to those of adults; and that, among teenagers, sudden mood swings, irritability, and loss of interest were merely typical developmental features. Today it is acknowledged that depression can compromise significantly many areas of children's and adolescents' lives; if not identified and treated, it may well persist into adulthood. This book describes theoretical models and practical tools for assessing and treating childhood and adolescent depression. Cognitive behavioural therapy is the most effective approach to addressing developmental mood disorders.
