To celebrate the anniversary of Cipolla’s Literacy and Development in the West (1969), the University of Rome Tor Vergata organized a multidisciplinary workshop with the collaboration of the Orebro University and the University of Siena. The participants (both historians and economists) discussed themes mostly concerning the Italian case and particularly related to the enormous amount of regional differences characterizing the diffusion of the early primary school system since the late 18th century.
