What are the apocryphal gospels, and what exactly do they contain? Why were the apocrypha left out of the Christian Bible canon? In Christianity's early centuries there abounded many different versions of Jesus' teaching, but only some of them survived a lengthy process of selection and evaluation and came to be regarded, often controversially, as authentic texts. This book describes and discusses the most important apocryphal gospels, illustrates the origins of Jesus-centred traditions, and attempts to explain the difficult ways in which memory of Jesus' words and deeds was established.
