GIANCARLO BOSETTI co-founded, in 1993 along with 30 other intellectuals, "Reset", a periodical which he continues to edit. In 1998 he founded the on-line cultural review "Caffè Europa", of which he is the editor. In the year 2000 he founded another on-line review, "Boiler", dedicated to science, the environment, and technological innovation. Since 1997 he has taught Theory and Techniques of Journalism Language at Rome’s Terza Università. His publications include: Socialismo liberale, Roma, 1989; La lezione di questo secolo, Padova, 1992.

JEAN-CLAUDE CASANOVA has been the president of the scientific committee of the Institut National d'Etudes Démographiques since 1996. With Raymond Aron he co-founded "Commentaire"(1978), which he currently edits. He has written regularly for "Le Figaro"since 1996. His recent publications include: Mélanges offerts à Raymond Aron (ed.), Paris, 1985; Six manière d'être européens, Paris, 1990; Entre l'Etat et le marché. ALESSANDRO CAVALLI is the editor of "Il Mulino", a member of Accademia Europea, a founding member of CYRCE (Circle Youth Research Cooperation in Europe), and a member of the scientific board of the IARD Institute. His recent publications include: Youth in Europe (with O. Galland), Pinter, London, 1995; Corso di sociologia (with A. Bagnasco and M. Barbagli), Bologna, 1997; Giovani verso il 2000 (ed., with C. FEDERICO COEN is a former member of the national board of the Italian Socialist Party, in which he was also responsible for cultural policy. He used to edit "Mondoperaio", the party’s cultural monthly. In 1984 he founded the Italian edition of "Lettera internazionale", which he continues to edit. In 1997 he became a member of the Democratici di Sinistra. His recent publications include: Sinistra italiana, sinistra europea, Gengami, 1997; Le Cassandre di "Mondoperaio", Marsilio, 1999.

LUIS MARIA DIEZ-PICAZO has worked for the Ministry of Justice and taught for eight years at the European University Institute in Florence. He currently teaches Constitutional Law at the University of Málaga. His recent publications include: La criminalidad de los gobernantes (1996); El poder de acusar (Ministerio fiscal y constitucionalismo) (2000).

SANTOS JULIÁ has earned a Ph.D. in Sociology and directs the Department of Social History and History of Political Thought at the UNED (Università nazionale di Educazione a distanza). He has written many studies on Madrid, the Spanish Republic, trade union movements, socialism, republicanism, intellectuals and historiography. His publications include: Manuel Azaña, una biografía política (Madrid, Alianza, 1990); Los socialistas en la política española, 1879-1982 (Madrid, Taurus, 1997); Víctimas de la guerra civil (ed.) (Madrid, Temas de Hoy, 1999).

DAVID MARQUAND was M.P. for Ashfield in 1966-1977 and is now Principal of Mansfield College Oxford and Honorary Professor of Politics at the University of Sheffield. His books include: Ramsay MacDonald (2nd ed.) (1997); The New Reckoning: Capitalism, States and Citizens (1997); The Progressive Dilemma (1999). He is a Fellow of the British Academy and was awarded the Political Studies Association’s 2001 Isaiah Berlin Prize for lifetime contribution to Political Studies.

CESARE MERLINI is President of UTET Spa (since 1999) and President of the Executive Board of the Consiglio per le Relazioni fra Italia e Stati Uniti (since 1983). His books include: Fine dell’atomo? LUIGI PEDRAZZI has been a member of the «il Mulino» working group since its beginnings, and edited the review from January 1961 to March 1965. A secondary education teacher, he has had held various political posts at the local level, including city councillor in Bologna from 1956 to 1960 (as an independent in the Christian Democrat list headed by Giuseppe Dossetti) and deputy mayor of Bologna from 1995 to 1999.

ROMANO PRODI was, from 1971 to 1999, professor of Industrial Organisation and Industrial Policy at the University of Bologna. In 1996-1999 he was a Member of Parliament. In 1996-1998 he was President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic. In September 1999 he was named President of the European Commission. His publications include: Il capitalismo ben temperato (Il Mulino, 1995); L’Italia che vogliamo (Donzelli, 1995); Un’idea dell’Europa (Il Mulino, 1999)

BEN ROGERS, contributing editor of "Prospect", is the author of Pascal: In Praise of Vanity (Phoenix, London, 1998) and an acclaimed biography of the English philosopher A.J. Ayer: A Life (Chatto and Windus, London, 1999). He writes for a wide variety of newspapers and journals, including the "Guardian", "The Financial Times"and the "Sunday Telegraph". He is currently writing a book about roast beef, John Bull and English nationalism.

PIERRE ROSANVALLON has been professor of History and Political Philosophy at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (in Paris) since 1984. He is currently the chairman of the Centre de Recherches Politiques Raymond Aron. His books include: L'Etat en France de 1789 à nos jours, Le Seuil, 1990; Le Peuple introuvable. Histoire de la représentation démocratique en France, Gallimard, 1998; La Démocratie inachevée. Histoire de la souveraineté du peuple en France, Gallimard, 2000.

GIAN ENRICO RUSCONI teaches Political Science at the University of Turin. His books include: Se cessiamo di essere una nazione (1993); Resistenza e postfascismo (1995); Patria e repubblica (1997), all published by Il Mulino; Come se Dio non ci fosse. I laici, i cattolici e la democrazia (Einaudi, 2000).

NORBERT SEITZ is a political scientist and since 1989 has been an editor of "Die Neue Gesell-schaft/Frank-furter Hefte" He writes regularly for "Tages-spiegel", "Süddeutsche Zeitung" "Frankfurter Rundschau". He is author of the book Doppelpässe. Fußball & Politik (1997).
